St. Anthony Village, MN — St. Anthony Resident Ben Phillip has filed for candidacy for an open seat on the St. Anthony-New Brighton District 282 School Board. Mr. Phillip has worked in education and technology for over 20 years, dealing with various successes and struggles that affect educational institutions.
“Ever since the shooting of Philando Castile, it jolted me to want to make a difference for people of color,” Mr. Phillip said. “Through community conversations, the schools were eventually discussed as a place to make a difference, especially in terms of addressing equity issues and closing the achievement gap. With my years of experience, I feel that I can bring new ideas to help all students succeed.”
Mr. Phillip is currently leading and managing an IT program at Summit Academy OIC, a vocational school in North Minneapolis, to get underrepresented adults careers in the IT industry. He has lived in St. Anthony Village for 15 years. He has helped with issues of equity and adverse childhood experiences through the St. Anthony Villagers for Equity and Community and Family Services Collaborative respectively. He continues to volunteer with the community through the schools and booster club. He previously ran for school board in 2017 and narrowly missed out on an open seat by 231 votes. Mr. Phillip is excited for an opportunity to further serve his community and help the school district to continue to evolve in a positive direction for all students in the system.
